Volunteering in Schools - Community Experience

 

The program simply offers you the opportunity to travel to Arusha in Tanzania, and work as a volunteer in schools to support teachers and play with kids - English, Math and Kindergarten classes.

This is a 100% Tanzanian volunteering experience. You get to live with a Tanzanian family in their house, eat their food, and embrace the culture differences and learn from them.
The family will take care of you and provide you with accommodation and food as an exchange of your time volunteering in schools of the neighborhood and sometimes volunteering in small projects around the house.

 

What the volunteer has to do?

25 hours per week of the following:

✔ Teaching Kids

✔ Teaching ladies in a Community Center

✔ Helping the Host Family

✔ Helping with Projects with the Host Family

About the Program:

 

This type of volunteering helps to travel cheaply - you will be hosted by a Tanzanian family in Arusha and they will provide accommodation and 3 meals for 10$ a day in exchange of volunteering. You will get to know volunteers from all over the world, living and exploring the city from a different concept, not just as a tourist. And the best thing is that you will experience Tanzanian culture deeply during your time in the family house. Also, the life in Tanzania is very cheap compared to Europe.

Arusha is a Tanzanian city and the regional capital of the Arusha Region, with a population of 2,356,255
You will be hosted by a Tanzanian family in Arusha and they will provide accommodation and 3 meals for 10$ a day in exchange of helping volunteering / teaching kids in a school in the neighborhood. The house is super nice and they have a spacious gardens where you can relax and enjoy the nature of Tanzania.
The school is 10-15 minutes away walking from the family house.
The School is from kindergarten to 7th grade.
When you arrive you will choose according to your skills which classes you will be helping and supporting.
You will get to meet a lot of kids, play with them, laugh and teach by helping the teachers or sometimes take over the class and teach by yourself.
You need to wake up everyday and at 8:00 to have breakfast. And then leave at 9:00 to the school.
Your help at the school will be done around 13:00 and then you can go back home right after.
Sometimes you can help the host family with different projects that they have. Usually in farming, painting and fixing stuff. And sometimes you can do an hour class teaching English to the ladies next door, or you can teach / learn sewing and help the ladies with their small project to sew some clothes or products. Also, you can help them sell them online (you can be creative).
On weekends you are totally free to do whatever you want. 

+ You need pills against Malaria (it is preferable to buy medicines from pharmacies in your country).   

 

✏️ About Work:

âś” Volunteering / Teaching in schools and helping the teachers in their classes.
âś” Help the hosting family with small projects that they have like farming.
âś” Teaching the neighborhood ladies an hour class of English in some afternoons.
âś” Helping the ladies in the sewing project next door and you can help them sell these products online.

 

🏠 Accommodation:

Costs for accommodation are daily: $10

• The room in the accommodation is shared by either 2 or a private room (depending on the number of volunteers).

• Shared rooms and bathrooms - males in a shared accommodation and females in another shared accommodation.

 

🕶️ Activities for Days Off:

• Visit the HotSprings in Moshe.
• Safari Game drive and camping in the biggest safari in Africa (Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area) - recommended.
• Hike mount Kilimanjaro (the highest mountain in Africa) - it’s hard and a challenging hike for a few days.
• Visit the Masai Tribe.
• You can enjoy the local bars and clubs at night with other volunteers.

You can arrange all of these activities with the host or you can check on the internet.

The weather in Arusha is generally summer-like, with temperatures ranging between 16°C and 28°C.

 

📆 Registration Dates:

Program Availability: All year long

• Days off: 2 days per week.
• Minimum period for volunteering: 1 week (Preference is given to those who choose a longer period)

 

💳 Registration Fees: (Does not include HomeAwe Fees)

$10 daily - paid in cash to the host.

The fees cover accommodation and food.

Regarding registration fees, flight costs and living expenses in Arusha, this opportunity is invaluable. A regular tourist trip would undoubtedly cost more. Here, the experiences you will have with HomeAwe are unique. And the daily life is relatively affordable.

• Important note - If you decide to participate for 2 weeks or more, you will need to pay an additional $200 for a work visa.

 

đź“‹ Registration Process:

1. Sign Up through the program's link down below - your details and answers to the questions will be reviewed and based on that, your acceptance will be determined. (It is preferable not to hesitate in providing clear and explicit answers to the questions without any sense of shyness. The clearer, more spontaneous and heartfelt your answers are, the higher the likelihood of your acceptance).
If we do not contact you within 2 weeks, it means that you have not been accepted.
If you are accepted, we will communicate with you via email to arrange the payment of the registration fees to reserve your spot in the program.

2. After you Sign Up, you'll receive an email that has a link to pay the registration fees of $400 to HomeAwe to reserve your spot in the program and to arrange a personal interview.

3. Have a personal interview with HomeAwe for introduction and further explanation of details.
+ In certain cases, an introductory interview with the HomeAwe team or program organizers will be scheduled to provide more detailed information about volunteering, confirm your acceptance and set a volunteering schedule. After the interview, your acceptance will be official 100%. If, for some reason, you are not accepted after the interview, the registration fee will be refunded on the same day.
Once you are officially accepted 100%, with or without an interview, there is no refund for the registration fees, even in case of an emergency. The fees will be retained until your participation in another program later on.

4. The host will communicate with you directly via WhatsApp or email to arrange your arrival day and to come pick you up from the airport.
